Mr Van der PoelThe MEDEA+ Forum 2003, held at the Estrel Convention Center, Berlin, on November 25th to 26th was officially opened by the German State Secretary of BMBF (Bundesministerium f?r Bildung und Forschung). More than 280 participants from all over Europe attended.

The extensive programme gave an excellent overview on status, facts, figures and milestones achieved so far as well as an insight into preparations carried out and the strategic perception for the MEDEA+ second phase 2005-2008.

As part of the Forum, Project Leaders of the finished R&D projects presented their results and all running MEDEA+ Applications and Technologies projects were discussed at the dedicated poster and demonstration sessions. MEDEA+ industrial partners gave keynote speeches on ?digital convergence from system on a chip to system above a chip? as well as on ?future trends in electronics and semiconductors for automotive applications.? In addition, a guest-speaker from an Italian mobile operator, as end-user in the food-chain of semiconductors, presented ?the role of technological innovation in the new wireless data cycle?. Particular attention was paid towards ?the role of SMEs in co operative R&D in Europe? by means of an introduction and panel discussion between representatives of SMEs in Europe.

The appointment of the new MEDEA+ Chairman, Arthur van der Poel, was announced. He concluded the two day event with a strong plea that with a joint effort from Industry and Governments the future of the European nanoelectronics industry can be secured.

The Forum press conference with participation of CEOs of partner companies gave journalists an ample field for questions and answers.

In a specific evening session held for members of the German Parliament, MEDEA+, BMBF and major German industry representatives gave testimony on successful R&D investments undertaken by Public Authorities and Industry. For creation and preservation of employment with high efficiency, this kind of investment seems to be second to none.
